Breaking the 'Default' Starts With Registering to Vote
David Elisma is urging francophone families to confirm their voter registration ahead of the October 26, 2026 election.
The default is not broken on election day. It is broken before then, on the voters' list. Too many eligible francophone Catholic families, tenants, and citizens without children are placed, by default, on another list. On October 26, 2026, that can mean something very concrete: losing their voice in the CECCE Zone 6 election.
How it works
The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) assigns every residential record in Ontario a 'school support' designation: English public, French public, English Catholic, or French Catholic. Unless an eligible person explicitly requests a change, MPAC applies a default designation — and by default, that designation does not place you on the French Catholic voters' list.
The result: people who want to vote for CECCE are counted as voters for another school board, simply because no one showed them how to check and correct their record. They receive the same bill, for the same amount, but they can lose their say in the election that chooses their school board trustee.
Let's be clear: correcting your designation does not change what your household pays. Since 1998, Ontario school board funding has been pooled provincially and calculated per student; the residential school tax rate is uniform regardless of designation. Same bill, same amount — but the right voters' list, and therefore the right democratic voice.
